Columbia Debris
The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster was on February 1, 2003, when Columbia disintegrated over Texas and Louisiana as it reentered Earth's atmosphere which killed all seven crew members. In the months after the disaster the largest organized ground search took place. Thousands of volunteers helped to participate in the effort to gather the Shuttle’s remains.

A woman in Turley, Oklahoma, got hit by space junk in January 1997 when she was struck with a lightweight fragment of charred woven material. She was not injured. It was identified as debris from a Delta 2 booster which reentered the Earth's atmosphere on Jan. 22, 1997. Other debris from that booster included a steel propellant tank and a titanium pressure sphere.
On Jan. 21, 2001 a Delta 2 third stage reentered the atmosphere over the Middle East. Its titanium motor casing weighing about 154 pounds landed down in Saudi Arabia.

Conclusion
1. Explain a major deterrent for amassing space junk.
If the space junk built up too much there would be many collisions with satellites, spacecraft, and space stations. Eventually it might build up so much that you cant even reach space without getting hit with space junk.
2. Describe a viable system to protect a space craft from space junk.
Stronger reinforced space craft shells, it would add a lot of weight but it would be more protected from space junk collisions.
